- Fibrous dysplasia is a rare disease of the bone in which scar tissue (fibrous) grows instead of normal bone. This irregular tissue can weaken the affected bone, causing it to deform or break.
- In most cases, fibrous dysplasia occurs in a single location in a bone, but it can occur in multiple locations in multiple bones. Single bone involvement usually occurs in adolescents and young adults. People with more than one affected bone usually develop symptoms before the age of 10.
- Although fibrous dysplasia is a genetic disorder, it is caused by a genetic mutation that is not passed from parent to child. There is no cure for the disorder. Fibrous dysplasia is linked to a genetic mutation found in certain bone-producing cells. The mutation leads to the production of immature and irregular bone tissue. Most often, the irregular bone tissue (lesion) is present in a single location on a bone. Multiple bones are less likely to be affected and there may be more than one lesion on multiple bones.
A lesion usually stops growing during puberty. However, the lesions can develop again during pregnancy.
Severe fibrous dysplasia can cause:
Bone deformity or fracture. The weakened area of an affected bone can cause the bone to flex. These weakened bones are also more likely to break.
Vision and hearing loss. Affected bones may surround the nerves in your eyes and ears. Severe deformity of the facial bones can cause vision and hearing loss, but it is a rare complication.
Arthritis. When the bones of the leg and pelvis are deformed, arthritis can develop in the joints of these bones.
