Breast reduction in women and gynecomastia in men

American Board Certified – Plastic Surgery

Breast reduction is a very popular Surgery to help women who have very large ptotic breasts with back and shoulder problems. The surgery improves the appearance of the breasts but is most enjoyable for relieving back and shoulder problems. Breast reduction in men is the surgical correction of overdeveloped or enlarged breasts in men.

Breast hypertrophy, macromastia or gigantomastia are various terms used to describe excessive breast enlargement in women. This can occur at any age and is quite common in India, although surgery is most common in the United States.

The breasts become large and heavy and hang down or are “ptotic”, which leads to a lot of back, shoulder and breast problems. Imagine walking around your neck with two large sacks of flour and then imagining the relief of someone taking off that load.

The relief after this Surgery is so great that most US insurance companies cover this Surgery unlike any other cosmetic Surgery. It can be the result of hormonal changes, inheritance, diseases, or the use of certain medications. Most of the time, however, no cause is known. Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and affect your confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities, such as swimming, to hide their condition.

Gynecomastia is characterized by

Excess localized fat
Excessive development of the glandular tissue
A combination of excess fat and glandular tissue
Gynecomastia can be unilateral (one breast) or bilateral

Where your surgery is done

Breast reduction is done in a hospital or an outpatient surgery center. If you are hospitalized, your stay will be short. The surgery itself usually takens one to three hours, but in some cases may taken longer if other Surgerys are done together.

The operation

Breast reduction in women removes skin, fat and breast tissue and raises and repositions the nipple. The latest techniques include small cuts and the use of ultrasound liposuction. The scars with the new techniques are hidden and settle very well.
Breast reduction in men can be done in two ways, depending on the severity of the problem: the first is just liposuction alone, the second is liposuction combined with gland removal and tissue removal. A useful addition is the use of ultrasound liposuction, which is now available in some centers in India. No scars are visible after male breast reduction.
Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia when tissue removal, gland reduction and liposuction are performed. If only liposuction is performed, the Surgery can be done under local anesthesia.

After your surgery

After the surgery, you will be wrapped in an elastic bandage or surgical garment. You may feel Painless in the first few days, especially when you move or cough, and discomfort for a week or more. Your surgeon will prescribe medication to relieve the Painless.
The bandages are removed two to five days after the operation, even though you wear the surgical clothing around the clock for several weeks until the swelling and bruising subside. Her stitches will be removed in women two weeks after breast reduction. With male breast reduction, there is usually no need to remove any sutures, since the seam line is located in the brown skin around the nipple (areola).

Back to normal

Although you will get up in a day or two, your breasts may still hurt for a few weeks. You should avoid lifting or pushing heavy objects for three or four weeks.
Your surgeon will give you detailed instructions on how to resume normal activities. Most men and women can get back to work in a week or two (if it’s not too strenuous) and get socially involved.

Your new look

Although much of the swelling and bruising has gone in the first few weeks, it can taken six months for your chest area to get in
