Complications
Interstitial lung disease can cause a number of life-threatening complications, including:
- Pulmonary arterial hypertension (pulmonary hypertension). Unlike systemic high blood pressure, this condition only affects the arteries in your lungs. It starts when scar tissue or low oxygen levels restrict smaller blood vessels and restrict blood flow to your lungs. This in turn increases the pressure in the pulmonary arteries. - Right heart failure (cor pulmonale). This serious condition occurs when the lower right chamber of the heart (right ventricle) – which is less muscular than the left – has to pump harder than usual to move blood through clogged pulmonary arteries.
