- Salivary gland tumors are the growth of abnormal cells (tumors) that begin in the salivary glands. Salivary gland tumors are rare.
- The salivary glands produce saliva, which aids digestion, keeps the mouth moist, and supports healthy teeth. You have three main pairs of salivary glands under and behind your jawbone: parotid, sublingual, and submandibular. Many other small salivary glands are found in your lips, cheeks, and mouth and throat.
- Salivary gland tumors can start in any of your salivary glands. Most are not cancerous (benign), but sometimes they can be cancerous. Most salivary gland tumors occur in the parotid gland.

- Salivary gland tumors start when certain cells in a salivary gland develop changes (mutations) in their DNA. A cell’s DNA contains the instructions that tell a cell what to do.
- The changes cause the cells to grow and divide quickly. The abnormal cells continue to live when the healthy cells die. The cells that accumulate form a tumor.

Risk factors
Factors that can increase your risk of developing salivary gland tumors include:
An older age. Although salivary gland tumors can occur at any age, they are most common in the elderly.
Radiation exposure. Radiation treatments for cancer, such as B. radiation used to treat head and neck cancer can increase the risk of salivary gland tumors.
