It is not known what causes thyroid cancer.

Thyroid cancer occurs when cells in your thyroid undergo genetic changes (mutations). Mutations allow cells to grow and multiply quickly. Cells also lose the ability to die like normal cells would. The abnormal thyroid cells that accumulate form a tumor. The abnormal cells can invade nearby tissues and spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body.

Types of thyroid cancer include:

Risk factors

Factors that can increase your risk of thyroid cancer include:
